This project is a collaboration with EPD-Norge (www.epd-norge.no). The research focus on methodologies and structures of product category rules (PCRs) and environmental product declarations (EPDs). New PCRs and EPDs are developed in collaboration with companies and the research institutions, Østfoldforskning and Sintef.

  • Innovation in Global Maritime Production 2020 (IGLO-MP)

Short description:
 

The overall focus of IGLO-MP is to strengthen the competitive capabilities of the Norwegian maritime industry in order to improve competitiveness. Key objectives are:
Develop knowledge regarding future strategies for the maritime industry (international business and globalisation perspectives;
  Develop knowledge of innovation processes in global business systems;
Develop knowledge of production processes in global business systems, a value chain perspective on production, process and technology innovation in global value chains;
Develop knowledge of firm level CSR and environmental challenges as well as opportunities in the context of global innovation and production systems;
  Develop knowledge for innovation based modular product design.

  • Cleaner Technology and Environmental Management (CTEM) in Bhutan

Short description:
 

During the period of August 2009 through June 2010 an NTNU project team, led by members of the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management, worked on the CTEM project. The objective of the project is to assist the specified industries and the Ministry in identifying low cost and viable solutions to introducing CTEM.

Additional objectives include:
1) Build capacity at Ministry and company levels to identify problem areas and ways of seeking solutions.
2) Establish a network with the Ministry and industries for possible future co-operation.
3) Provide a roadmap for the introduction of CTEM in industries.
4) Develop an environmental management plan for the Pasakha Industrial Estate with focus on waste management.

The project is conducted under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) in Bhutan, and funded by Danida. The project team includes NTNU personal and other professionals. Participating from NTNU are Professor Annik Magerholm Fet, project leader and expert responsible for wood guidelines, Dr. Cecilia Haskins, project secretary, and Researcher Mr. Uno Abrahamsen, expert responsible for steel and ferro-alloy guidelines. Other experts include Dr. Fritz Balkau, independent consultant, France, responsible for mining and industrial estate guidelines, and Mrs. Helene Jordans, PEM Consultant, Denmark, responsible for agro and cement guidelines. The project was managed on behalf of the MoEA by Ms. Yeshey Selden, PPD, assisted by Mr. Sonam Tashi, PPD, project coordinator, and Mr. Sonam Lhendup, PPD.

A roundtable conducted in March 2010 received interest from high-level government officials and Bhutanese industrial leaders and was covered by the news media in Bhutan.

  • C(S)R in Global Value Chains: a Conceptual and Operational Approach

Short description:
 

The overall goals are to:
Undertake a critical examination of current CSR business and regulatory/self-regulatory practices, with a particular focus on distributed industrial organisation in selected global value chains;
Develop practice-oriented recommendations, mechanisms and tools aimed at improving current CSR performance, reporting and verification systems and regulation.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility in the US and Norway (CRUSAN)

Short description:

The principal objective of this pre-project is to build the relationships necessary to facilitate the development of future collaborative projects between NTNU, Norwegian industry and US industry in areas related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The end goal is creating innovative solutions in sustainable development, resource management and environmental stewardship that lead to responsible, knowledge-based economic development in Norway.

  • Data assisted tool for sustainability product information (DATSUPI)

Short description:

Manufacturers who produce and sell in the global marketplace are coming under increasing requirements for product documentation. These firms must be prepared to provide documentation regarding environmental impacts and quality issues. In addition, the spotlight on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) creates its own demands for additional documentation. Each of these areas is addressed by international standards. Any program will first and foremost provide opportunities to identify where there are similarities and differences between the furniture-making practices in the USA and Norway, and to learn from each other how to improve the way furniture is made

  • Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) as a tool for documentation/information on chemicals and toxicity in the value chains of products – a pre-study for EPD – Norway

Short description:

The project shall aim at:
– Proposal of format and content on information of chemicals toxic impacts in Product Category Rules (PCR) as a basis for PCR/EPD for 3 product categories and products based on available information and knowledge;
–  Proposals of documentation and calculation methods based on existing methods for documenting toxic impact on health, environment and indoor environment;
–  Test of format and calculation methods for 3 cases of product categories (PCR’s) and 3 products (EPD’s).
The project will be based on available information from existing national and international documentation systems and classification/characterisation systems.

Short description:

The research is primarily focused on effects of changing the threshold value for when public procurements must be announced for competitive tendering. In addition, understanding, interpretation and effects of green public purchasing in municipalities in Norway is surveyed.
