Environmental Management and CSR (EMCSR) at IØT

Environmental Management and Corporate Social Responsibility (EMCSR) is a strategic research programme at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (IØT) at NTNU. EMCSR is initiated by one of the key research areas at IØT, namely Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

According to the European Commission, CSR is defined as “a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis”.

Research in the field of CSR requires a multidisciplinary approach, where IØT and both its employees'  expertise across a wide range of disciplines meet this requirement. Examples of research areas where IØT can apply its expertise in CSR are:

  • Organizational Development
  • Health, Safety and Environment
  • Logistics and Purchasing Management

These are only a few of the research and educational topics that IØT is engaged in. More information about research and teaching at IØT can be found at the department's web-page: http://www.ntnu.no/iot.

Strategic research programmes addressing CSR

IØT has identified two strategic research programmes related to CSR, which bring together researchers from different sections within the department. Here is a brief description of these research programmes:

  • Environmental Management and CSR (EMCSR) in Global Value Chains

This research programme has been established to connect existing and potential research activities in the field of CSR at IØT. It focuses on the understanding of global systems and how to use experiences from environmental management tools and their application in global value chains and international industrial networks on CSR. It further focuses on how to communicate CSR performance by means of indicators and use this information for strategic decision making and value chain analysis to contribute to sustainable development. It also intends to provide practical solutions for organizations concerned about social and environmental responsibilities and interested in improving their performance and accountability in these areas.

  • Supply Chain Management

One of the priorities of this programme is to develop an understanding on how companies should manage the social and environmental aspects of their suppliers' activities, and to what extent supply chain risks should be managed in a supply chain.
